Women’s Wisdom Art Fiber Arts Class – January 16th to February 20th, 2017
Ali Lichtenstein will lead this class supported by Renee Traud and Sharon Liberatore
This is a sewing-optional, fused-fiber class taking inspiration from North American African American quilters.
Beginning with quilts from Gees Bend, Alabama, quilters, we will look at abstraction, color, line and scale. Then we’ll move backwards in time to personal narrative quilts made by enslaved African American women. We’ll finish this quick introduction with the works of contemporary community quilter Faith Ringgold and Bisa Butler’s portrait quilts.
Our objectives are to learn a bit about African American women’s quilts in the spirit of upcoming Black History Month, and to learn why these quilts are so influential in the craft and fine art worlds today.
We’ll discuss the dangers of slipping into cultural appropriation as we glean inspiration and new artistic insights in order to create our own new, original art. We will work small and in a series. This will give us opportunity to learn fused fiber techniques and to explore the value of creating in a series.
Stitching will be an option on some of the pieces for those who may be interested; embellishment may be used when we study Faith Ringgold’s community quilts.
